ARTIST STATEMENT
This drawing of an African black rhino is dramatic. Using chiaroscuro lighting, I’ve highlighted the rhino’s powerful features and textured skin, creating an arresting contrast against the deep black background. It’s a piece that celebrates the strength of this incredible animal while inviting you to reflect on its vulnerability.
This is a statement of what could be lost, the rhino stark against the black of oblivion. Critically endangered, the rhino faces extinction from poaching and habitat loss. I depict endangered animals because it is through connecting with emotion that people act. We are culpable and it is only through our efforts that they can be saved and perhaps restored. The title Winter Shadows is both a reference to the lighting and tone of this piece, but also an allegory that the white rhino is declining, perhaps to be swallowed by the darkness of extinction without our help.
