ARTIST’S STATEMENT
This is a print of a drawing from my ‘Wings on Wood’ collection. I love drawing the softness of feathers against the rigidity of wood, the contrast of textures, the many different forms wood can take.
Fairy wrens are one of my favourite birds. I have spent hours listening to their twittering, both in the Hunter Valley on the weekends I spent as a girl at the family vineyard, and on my morning walks near my home in Sydney. Adult males flit like blue meteors through the undergrowth, to pause on twigs and logs to sing, only to dive in a flash of cobalt beyond view again.
In this piece the brilliant blue is brought out by the black background as the bird perches on a log carved with meandering woodgrain, the sun spangling beyond. This is an accent piece to compliment any room. It can be hung alone or grouped with other prints from the same collection. Each week I am drawing new pieces to expand this range of birds against black backgrounds.
