This painting is to be one of a series highlighting endangered species, (a metaphor with the last ray of sunlight signifying the last chance we have of saving these animals). These beautiful creatures were nearly hunted to extinction for their thick waterproof fur. Sea otters are still endangered and affected by pollution, oil spills and fragmented populations. Without sea otters to prey on urchins and star fish, giant kelp forests were decimated. Giant kelp forests provide habit for many species as food sources, nurseries and protection from predators. They are also a valuable carbon sink, oxygenate sea water and protect coasts from erosion. They are crucial for biodiversity and the health of marine ecosystems. And sea otters are pivotal to kelp forests thriving.
