ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Hummingbirds have meaning for me, and I hope one day to view one in the wild. The only hummingbird to breed in north-eastern America, the Ruby-throated migrates to central America each winter. These iridescent birds are seven to nine centimetres long. With legs too short to walk or hop they shuffle along a perch. In this drawing, the brilliant emerald of a ruby-throated hummingbird contrasts with the burnt-sienna of rusting metal, its screws emphasizing the bird’s diminutive size.
