Close-up of an African White Rhinoceros dozing in the dust.

The White Rhino (Ceratotherium simum) once roamed much of sub-Saharan Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction. While habitat loss has played its part, the largest threat to all rhino is poaching for traditional eastern medicine. The white rhino is a favoured target as it lives in herds and is less aggressive than other solitary species.

I painted this from a photograph taken at Auckland Zoo. It is the melancholy expression that I connect with for it sums up the plight of these animals.
